获奖感言："I have many people to thank. First of all, the members of the Jury: I'm both very moved and very happy to know that the film succeeded in touching them – unanimously, to boot. Thank you very much. Naturally, I must thank Gilles Jacob, Thierry Frémaux, and the whole Festival team for inviting this film. I'm also thinking very gratefully of my producers, Caroline Benjo, Carole Scotta, and Barbara Letellier, as well as Laurence Petit, who is distributing the film. All this is the product of ten or twelve years of work together, in the course of which we have forged a real bond of friendship and loyalty. Here, on this night, all together, we're sharing an intense experience. Lately, the film business has not been especially open to making films that are slightly offbeat. It has become very difficult. Paradoxically, this film was made in a way that was... ideal. I read François Bégaudeau's book, and the whole process flowed from that point almost naturally. We were supported by a sort of state of grace throughout the production phase, from the auditions, where I met all these young people, through the writing of the film, borne along by encouraging signs that proved to be right, through the editing. Though I'm capable of sinking into the depths of darkest doubt at times, with this film there was a sort of lightness, due to the energy and strength of all the people with me here, who are born actors, just terrific. The film we wanted to make was supposed to look like French society: multi-faceted, lively, and complex, with conflicts that the film was not going to try to gloss over. I hope that's what the film looks like, and that we didn't get it wrong. Thank you very much!"

"I'm not all that surprised. Talking about school interests the whole world. The issues are pretty much the same, no matter what country you're talking about. Children go to school to learn something, but also so they'll grow up to be responsible adults, citizens. During the screenings, we sensed that the story was told in a sharable way. A foreign audience got into the film about as directly as the French audience. The discussions we were able to have with people after they'd seen the film confirmed my belief. It was a great source of delight to me, without being that much of a surprise... This film is also intended for people who don't know what school is like, who haven't set foot inside a school for a very long time, like most of us. Nevertheless, they have a set of unwavering opinions and prejudices about teaching, school, and the young people today, who are often portrayed as imbeciles. I hope the film does justice to young people, as well as doing justice to all the work that goes on inside the walls of a school."

At the Awards Press Conference, Garrone expressed his thanks: "I'll take advantage of this opportunity to express my gratitude at greater length. I must thank all the people who enabled me to make this film, especially Saviano, the author of the novel. The atmosphere in his story, his characters, and their stories gave me so much... I'm also very happy to be here alongside Paolo Sorrentino, because he's someone I have a great deal of respect for, even if our styles differ. Our taste and passion for filmmaking unite us. Lastly, the fact that two Italian films are award-winners is important on an international level. I am proud to be one of those two directors."

Accepting the honor, Paolo Sorrentino thanked his cast and crew and made a dedication: "Let me thank the Jury and Thierry Frémaux. Later, at the Awards Press Conference, he confided, "I came here mainly with the hope that the film could be understood, because it isn't an easy film; it aroused controversy in Italy. I didn't come here for the Prize... Now that we have won a prize, the number of people who are satisfied can only increase." (smile)

French actress Valerie Lemercier had the honors of handing the award for Best Actor to Benicio Del Toro for his role in Che by Steven Soderbergh.

The actor expressed his thanks:
"I have to thank Wild Bunch, I have to thank Tele5, to thank Warner Bros France. They made this dream come true, made this movie happen. I’d like to dedicate this to the man himself. I want to thank Cannes, I want to thank the Jury and I also want to share this with the director, Steven Soderbergh, who got up every day, forced me to do this. He was just a reflection for me of every day, getting up and doing it when we didn’t have anything else to do, we couldn’t do anything. We were completely lost, and he was there pushing it and pushed all of us. I’d also like to thank Laura Bickford, the producer."

During the Awards Press Conference, Benicio Del Toro added, "I wouldn’t be here without Che so this belongs to Che too and every award that the movie gets, you have to pay your respects to the man… I think that Latin America has been now for some time making a lot of cinema, a lot of great actors. It’s a great night for Latin American actors and a great night for cinema…a Mexican director on the Jury…there’s going to be more, and more…”

Walter Salles spoke first:
“I am proud to be in a profession that reflects what a nation is and the canvas of cinema. I am extremely proud to have this award given to an actress who is starting in cinema and gave her all in this unforgettably collective film. Thank you so much. I think that Sandra will be very touched to receive this prize, but even more so coming from this Jury.”
Daniela Thomas continued:
“Thank you very much for giving this prize to Sandra. She wasn’t here because she just had a most terrible event happen in her life: she was pregnant and she lost her baby. I can’t tell you what this will mean to her. Thank you very much to the Jury. It’s an incredible prize!”

During the Awards Press Conference, Daniela added, "I just taked to Sandra and I think she is feeling the same way we are; we never expected this. The whole process from beginning to end is a film that talks about things that we cherish, that we love, we believe, things about our country and the situation that we live in. And of course every filmmaker expects what he loves to be loved elsewhere. The power of her representation was always very incredible on the set, very touching. She’s an incredibly wonderful person to be around. We can’t be any happier."

And Walter added, "I think that the Festival paid homage to the youngest filmmaker, who is Manoel de Oliveira. He’s 100 years old, but according to Gilles Jacob, he may be 103 years old. And now this Jury has granted a prize to a young actress who has made her first film at 45 years old. It’s very refreshing because it brings a completely new life to cinema and to cinema made in Brazil. If she was here – she’s a very sensitive person – she would have shared this prize with the other actresses from Latin American films, and one in particular, Martina Guzma in Leonera (Lion’s Den)."

Speaking at the Awards Press Conference, the Dardenne brothers added, "There are a lot of things it's hard to get used to. Since the films are different every time, it's always a pleasure to receive an award... All the directors in a competition want their actress to win the Prize. It's only human - anyone who denies it is lying. The fact that Arta did not win the prize for best actress takes nothing away from the quality of her work. This Prize is a reward for the work my brother and I did, over two and a half years. Last year, about this time, we had just begun working with Jérémie, Arta, and Fabrizio. And that work was based on the screenplay. For it to get an award is wonderful. It's a beautiful prize, because we write the screenplays for our films. So it's also a prize for the film. When we write the script, we are already structuring the scenes, the shots, the camera moves, the pacing. When we start rehearsing, the script comes alive."

Best Short Film Palme d'Or to "Megatron" by Marian Crisan

Awarded by the President of the Cinéfondation and Short Film Jury Hou Hsiao Hsien and actress Kerry Washington, the Palme d'Or for the Best Short Film went to Megatron by Marian Crisan, who exclaimed, "I’m overwhelmed; I don’t know what to say. It’s a big surprise for me. I thank the Jury and I thank everyone in Cannes. Hello to my daughter and wife back in Romania. Bye."
Special Mention was given to Jerrycan by Julius Avery.

Caméra d'Or: "Hunger" by Steve McQueen

Director Bruno Dumont, President of the Caméra d'Or Jury, along with Dennis Hopper, awarded the Caméra d'Or to Hunger by Steve McQueen (UK) presented in Un Certain Regard.
Mr. McQueen responded, "I want to say thank you to the Jury and to the decision-making, and also, it’s one of my great pleasures to receive this from one of my personal heroes, Dennis Hopper. He’s a man who takes chances and I respect that very much. My film Hunger was about the troubles in Northern Ireland during the 1981 hunger strikes. Within the prison, there were prison officers who I identify with and protestors who I identify with. The film is about people in a situation and what these people do. Thank you very much."

A Special Mention was granted to Everyone Will Die But Me by Valeria Gaï Guermanika (Russia), presented in Critics Week. She dedicated the prize to her daughter, "I would like to thank my producer, Igor Tolstunov, my crew, my distributor and Critics’ Week and all of humanity. And especially, I was pregnant throughout the shoot and it is to her that I would like to dedicate my prize, Octavia."
